So when agave is about to die, the do a last ditch effort to reproduce and that’s what you’re seeing here. It’ll grow drastically and get its seeds as high as possible for the wind to blow them off.

If you wait for the sun to get about 45 degrees in the sky then you can measure the shadow on the ground. Or what we did in geo class was use a level and calculate the tangent with a known distance from the thing you’re measuring.
