as a CNA I don't have access to his chart the way nursing does. I don't know if it's required for them to read it or not but we don't even have that option. We should be getting the main stuff from report though.

Any information that I know about a resident, I learned it from them or a family member. For some reason the nurses/admin doesn’t tell us anything. It’s just as frustrating for us as it is for you, I promise. I hate walking into a new residents room and idk anything about them

Having 30-60 patients makes it hard but on first round they should all be assessed and the chart should be reviewed if anything seems off.

Seriously I stayed anywhere from 2-4 hours beyond my shift to get the work done when I used to work in 1. The system has failed and there is no time. I rarely got a break and then the HUC hogged the charts (it was paper charting when I worked in one), and literally got mad if I tried to look in one. I was in constant fight or flight mode at that job, the work is impossible to complete. On the overnight shift it was 1 nurse to 60 residents. There is no way you could read through all the charts

you try to take care of 15-20 pts and see how it is difficult at times. Have beef with the healthcare system not the nurses doing their best to survive.

If people only understood how broken the healthcare system is and how healthcare administration cares more about a profit than allowing enough staff to give proper care.

Sometimes it’s not what you think. I talk to all my patients even when I know they’re not going to respond. It’s maintaining their dignity as a person.

No, cna do not have access to their charts only nurses and doctors. They do get some details in report. But you have to remember some are agency works one time there and no they don't go grab 28 to 30 charts and read them all.

It's the greed of the company. They would rather short staff themselves and pocket the profit then provide safe and efficient care to their cash cows.

No, I’m not required to read 41 charts before I start my shift. Nurses give report to the next shift, and we often give a glance to a note, but 41 charts?

Your money is paying a corporation whose main motive is profit. Do they hire enough nursing staff? No. They never have.

As a nurse these comments are not it. It should have been one of the main things mentioned in hand over which should occur before every shift - patient centered care

CVICU RN here. We read. But we have patient ratios that would blow your mind. We forget. We are human.

Absolutely not possible to read charts at start of shift. But a decent shift to shift report should pass this information on.

What I want to know is what prompts you to feel the need to tell us that? ... Cause I know for damn sure I would still make eye contact and I would still talk to him and I would still guide him in whichever way he needed to be guided in because that's the right thing to do regardless !!
That's like taking care of a patient in the ICU who is sedated, and not speaking to them. Speaking to every patient with respect and care while making eye contact is how humans deserve to be treated no matter the circumstances!!!
