@bradallenwilliams: does anyone still talk about old guitars now that they are priced way out of reach of most actual players? maybe not but either way i have a take
i do not get the "vintage guitars" fascination , i believe they are overpriced and it just for the ego.. i strongly believe that your best instrument it's a custom made instrument , that do not costs what a custom shop guitar

A similar thing happened with Martin guitars and they didn’t change ownership

Covid did the exact same thing! I worked at Sweetwater at that time, doing sales, and all music gear skyrocketed overnight because people were bored at home with stimulus checks. Fenders quality immediately tanked under the pressure and has not recovered since.

beatles -> everyone wants instruments -> makers didn't have enough, cut corners -> sold out to CBS, etc.

Very interesting take and I do appreciate you sharing it. When the Stratocaster was a cutting edge instrument it was priced at a point that people would find unacceptable today like the equivalent of like a nearly $10,000 or more instrument. Because it was something that only a professional would buy, and it was made for them. We live in a time now where solid body electric guitars especially, while on average being much better playing and appointed and configured, are very disposable. People treat them less like musical instruments and more like collectible toys. And a lot of that is a downstream effect of the ubiquity brought on by the popularity of rock music.

Really got the perspective of how small the operations were when they reopened the original Fender factory as a custom car garage you can maybe fit 13-14 cars in there! Used to be the entire operation in there, got to speak to Ron Thorn about the history of it

So what you're saying is avoid anything from 64 'till, what? 69? 70? When finally from bad quality due to rushing out stocks, bad quality was normalised to satisfy shareholders and could be justified by "It just needs a good setup" bullshit mentality.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the availability of quality woods and metals didn’t contribute. I know that started to become an issue for woodwinds at around the same time. (Maybe a little later)

I never really thought about it like that. Honestly, crazy how the Beatles changed music in even non-musical ways.

I have a theory that a lot of the complaints people have about Fender’s modern QC can also be chalked up to an issue of scale. When I was working at a guitar store I was unboxing dozens of Fenders a week, and on the whole they were incredibly consistent and we had very few QC problems (no more than any other company; less than Gibson) and few customer issues. I think until you’ve played dozens and dozens of the same instrument it’s hard to really understand the scale of what they’re producing. Fender doesn’t necessarily have more duds, they just make way more instruments.
