Originally revealed in 2017 and fielded starting in 2018–2019, this upgrade package was designed by Omsktransmash to dramatically improve protection, firepower, and electronics while retaining the platform's signature high mobility. Its core feature is a 1,250-horsepower GTD-1250TF gas turbine engine, which grants the 46-ton vehicle exceptional speed (up to 70 km/h) and the unique ability to start reliably in sub-zero Arctic environments down to -40°C where standard diesel engines freeze. For defense, the tank is wrapped in third-generation Relikt explosive reactive armor (ERA), providing robust protection against kinetic sabots and tandem-charge anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs). Its offensive power is anchored by a revised 125mm 2A46M-4 smoothbore cannon paired with an automatic loading mechanism. This main gun can fire advanced armor-piercing kinetic rounds as well as 9M119M1 Refleks laser-guided missiles capable of hitting targets up to 5 kilometers away. Enhanced with modern digital electronics, including the Sosna-U multi-channel thermal gunner's sight, the T-80BVM has been heavily deployed by Russian forces on frontline battlefields. However, it remains a subject of critique, as combat experiences have highlighted continuing vulnerabilities to modern FPV drone warfare and loitering munitions
