Diagnosed with the incredibly rare Grey Zone lymphoma, he went through countless rounds of chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and a stem cell transplant. Through every challenge, he and his family never stopped believing he would make it. In December 2018, at just 18 years old, Ian received the life-changing news—he was officially cancer-free. After years of fighting for his life, it finally seemed like a new chapter was beginning. That chapter lasted only one week. On December 21, 2018, while staying at a Motel 6 in northeast Portland, Ian was robbed and shot in the back of the head. He later died from his injuries. Authorities arrested 15-year-old Jeremiah Terrell Hannon, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Because he was a juvenile at the time, he was sentenced to the custody of the Oregon Youth Authority until no later than his 25th birthday.
