On July 26, 2009, 36-year-old Diane Schuler left a weekend camping trip in upstate New York, driving a borrowed red minivan with her two children and three nieces. The trip home to Long Island should have taken a little over two hours. Instead, nearly four hours later, witnesses began reporting a red minivan driving the wrong way down the Taconic State Parkway at high speed. In the hour before the crash, pieces of a disturbing timeline formed. Diane was seen pulled over, bent over as if sick. Her 8-year-old niece Emma called home from the toll road in tears, telling her mother, "There's something wrong with Aunt Diane." When Emma's father, Warren, called back, he heard Diane slurring, disoriented, and calling him by the wrong name. He begged her not to move the car and started driving out to find them. Instead, Diane left her phone on a guardrail and kept going. Minutes later, she steered onto the Taconic Parkway going the wrong way — 1.7 miles against traffic at roughly 80-85 mph. Multiple drivers called 911, describing a minivan coming straight at them, never braking, never swerving. At 1:35 p.m., Diane's van slammed head-on into an SUV, killing Diane, her 2-year-old daughter Erin, her three Hance nieces, and three men in the other vehicle: Michael and Guy Bastardi, and their friend Daniel Longo. Only Diane's 5-year-old son Bryan survived. Toxicology later showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.19 and high levels of THC, along with an empty vodka bottle found in the wreckage. Her husband and some relatives insisted she must have had a hidden medical crisis; other family members and witnesses pointed to long-term alcohol and marijuana use and growing stress in her life. The Bastardi family pushed for deeper investigation, feeling critical questions about Diane's substance use, the delayed 911 call, and what her family really knew were left unanswered. To this day, the Taconic State Parkway crash remains one of the most debated true-crime tragedies: a clash between the image of a hyper-competent "perfect mom" and the reality of a catastrophic decision that left eight people dead and three families shattered. #truestory #horrorstory #creepy #crime #truecrime
