Can eating too much protein actually make you fat? The answer is more interesting than a simple yes or no. 🔬 Let's say you needed 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, but you consistently ate 2 or more. What happens to all that extra protein? Your bloodstream keeps a pool of amino acids that's always in flux, and when there's a surplus, your liver steps in. It strips the amino group off each amino acid, leaving behind something called a carbon skeleton, basically the backbone of the molecule. Your body can do a lot with that carbon skeleton. It can burn it for energy as ATP, or it can convert it into a fatty acid and store it as fat. So technically, yes, excess protein can be stored as fat. But here's the reality. Protein is rarely the culprit behind fat gain. It sits third in line behind carbs and fats as your body's preferred energy source, and it's genuinely hard to overeat, because protein is far more satiating than carbohydrates. It fills you up before you get the chance. 👉 Want to understand how your body really works, system by system?
