@disccosmicray: if cooling these Data centers are the problem why aren't they being built in Antarctica? where the continent-wide average temperature is approximately -34.4°C (-30°F). #datacenter #ai #artificialintelligence #datacenters #fypシ

presumably because they don't have a good connection to the internet there?

Because even if the infrastructure was buily antarctica is very far away from usa so the latency would be terrible. Since this depends on the speed of light it cannot be improved. Data centers need to be relatively close to the people they are serving to be effective. Some data centers do use oceanwater cooling and it is effective but coastal real estate is expensive so it is not super common

saltwater causes a massive issue, but I agree with you go to a colder climate, but I think that's one reason why they chose Manitoba. it's cold. plus it has the employees

It also consumes electricity of 100,000 homes. How do u figure they will generate that amount of electricity up there? It’s a data centre. How do u expect them to maintain that data centre? Replace fried hardware, upgrade hardware etc etc.

cost. it is cheaper for them to use fresh water. it is cheaper to build them where shipping and hauling supplies to them are cheaper/shorter distances. or, capitalism. that's why

I like the Antarctica idea but we're already seeing tens of millions of dollars a year in damages to infrastructure because of melting permafrost. how would we even build on that?

Tbh i think the main problem with data centers is the energy usage. Especially in areas that still generate power using fossil fuels like coal and gas. I don’t know why everyone is focused on water it seems very convenient to the gas and oil companies that nobody talks about the energy at all and everyone focuses on the water

The Antarctic Treaty strictly protects the continent as a natural reserve dedicated to peace and science. Commercial projects, especially those that emit massive amounts of localized waste heat are legally prohibited.

I feel like placing those kind of factories in the arctic would fuck up the eco system even more no?

Data centers aren't the problem. Commercial agriculture is.

The real question is why aren't they using closed loop systems to reuse the cooling fluid. It's because America and many other countries don't have a government that make corporations work for the good of the community rather than pure profit.

Seriously, there's new batteries that desalinate and capture carbon... putting them in the Arctic or Antarctic would accelerate glacier melting.

You do realize saltwater is corrosive, right? So it's gonna corrode parts. And you were better when you were talking about it.Being put in a colder climate. But since we're canadian, it would have to be northern, not southern

ok. from the top. first off, they are. It's not here or there. it's here AND there. They are building data centres in the Arctic. Just because ones things happening doesn't mean the other isn't. next. The don't use fresh water. they usually need to use highly purified distilled, not just fresh water, if electronics are involved. Salt water doesn't "cause problems", it destroys the circuits. Which I'm not opposed to, but it's why only distilled water. what could be done is a 2nd stage heat exchanger, where a 2nd cooling loop using seawater cools the distilled loop, but so far, that's more resources consumed with tubes and metal, than the cost difference in the water.

Because it's cheaper to do it in a way that hurts people than in a way that doesn't. If a cost of a project doesn't show up in the financials, a business person will treat that cost like it doesn't exist. In the case of a publicly held company, they have a legal duty to do so. This is why you don't want business people running your society.
