@dr.shawna: What if the decades of people telling us “just get a degree” were really telling us to “pull ourselves up by our bootstraps”? What happens when false promises about the power of degrees meets larger, structural issues? This is part two of my series of why college is not just job training. We move beyond the question of who has access to education, to how those who buy into the promise of a degree are often sold individual solutions for systemic issues. We dive into work by Tressie McMillan Cottom and for more on that, let’s go to the research! #LearnOnTikTokContest #DidYouKnow #EduTok

Getting a degree even one in liberal studies or creative writing opens more doors than not having any college degree at all.

I have a degree in Computer Science. Its useless now. The field and tech becomes obsolete so fast - anything more then a six month break - no one will hire u. Most entry lvl grads can’t get hired now thanks to AI. I got a new set of degrees - Writing & English. I turn down job offers a lot now. Content writer, copywriter, technical writer for software teams, political copywriter/editor, freelance editor. No one knows what the market will look like 10 yrs down the road.

We also cannot actually predict what will be marketable or useful in the future on the job market. Computer programming was considered the epitome of “useful” for a while and now ppl are saying those positions will be less available with AI (which is a whole other discourse within itself). What is considered “valuable” now is never a guarantee to be valuable once you get those credentials.

Education should not just be a job training. You can do it to make yourself a better person and the world a better place too

Side note: as someone who did a Master’s and Doctorate with specializations in creative writing, yes, I absolutely did need to go to those programs! It made me the writer and thinker I am today, and for those who only care about the labor market, it was necessary for that as well. I work in higher ed, but I do not, in fact, work in my discipline; my education in those specific degree programs, however, made me successful in my current role.

the reason is simple engineering, finance, law, health, etc. RETURN SOMETHING TO SOCIETY, the rest are just hobbies that can be achive a master level with a 1 month course

as someone who wants to study ancient religion and ancient Greece (not just religion, but mostly religion) I wonder all the time if it's 'smart' to study in school. I want to do it but I don't know if I'll be able to afford it

i think people forget that “useless” degrees can be very helpful. I am a Comparative Women’s studies major but i’m on the pre-med track to become an ob/gyn. It was very important to me that I not only have the credentials to help my patients but the knowledge of the systems they live under to help them holistically.

Side note but I also hate the notion that science and philosophy or art or writing are completely separate and that one is valuable while the other isn’t. Meanwhile, those we consider to be the greatest scientists in history were ALSO philosophers and writers and musicians. There is value in both.

I want to take classes at the local junior college in Religious Studies, but I hate the idea of wasting my family's money on an education that won't bring us money. It feels selfish to pursue personal development

Thank you for this! I just graduated with a degree in liberal arts, thesis in queer theory and history, from a uni in Japan, and it’s so difficult to come back to the US and not blame myself for not choosing better to not be stuck in a min wage job living with my parents. Yet, my university education and the experience that came with it was the most enriching experience I’ve had. No idea what I’m supposed to do though.

See, what BROKE my brain was hearing how jobs used to invest in their workers' educations. You were hired young and THEN got the appropriate education to move up within your company (unless you were aiming to be an academic). Now, we are expected to invest in ourselves with no guarantee of employment in line with your training or education.

I did a “proper” engineering degree; nobody wants to hire grads, pay is mediocre, and career progression limited. No degree guarantees results 🤷🏻‍♂️

you are leaning into something that I feel uncomfortable with regarding commentary around education degrees. I'm in Australia, and people keep saying that our degree needs to be more vocational and on the ground, and less on theory... I actually think the opposite. I don't think enough universities place enough value on the theory... I find this concerning because it is the theory that challenges people to think, and it challenges their prejudices and thoughts, which I really think is so important in education.
