WHAT’s CUTER THAN A CHEETAH CUB? As a lifetime cat lover, and now wildlife photographer as I always dreamt of but never dared to before, it is one of my fondest dreams to be able to contribute to the preservation of the world’s wild and large cats. One of the most special of these is the cheetah, but photographing them is especially challenging. Except for mothers and their cubs, they are solitary creatures, blending seamlessly into the savannah they inhabit. The endless plain, as the Masai call the Serengeti, seems to conceal them perfectly. They are quite a threatened species, as only one of four cubs survives to adulthood. They are prey for fellow cats—lions and leopards—as well as hyenas and other predators. My persistence in returning to the Serengeti again and again, was paid off one cool early morning when my beloved guide spotted a cheetah cub—even more rare than an adult—on a tree. We raced over towards it across the dusty rutted roads, only to find that there was not only one cub, but two cubs, accompanied by their faithful mother. I was lucky enough to be able to watch the antics of these three lively creatures for more than an hour. They climbed up dead trees, they climbed down dead trees, they raced after their mother, and they tumbled around with each other. I particularly like this photo. It’s now my screen saver so these little cuties watch me every day, and I love it! I love the personality of these guys. The cheetah cubs look just as tough to manage as a couple of human kids—intent on following their own agenda no matter what mom might recommend. The joy I feel every time I look at this photo, or share it, is of reaching my dream of documenting these elusive animals, and showing not just their beauty, but their personalities as well. I hope you can appreciate them as well, and do what you can to contribute to their survival. #creatorsearchinsights
