Nolan is basing his adaptation of the odyssey from the woman’s translation!

Her translation is heavily criticized, however, as she simplified the text and added things that weren’t explicitly stated. Not saying this from a conservative perspective, but her translation certainly isn’t perfect. Also, she changed the meter to make it simpler

I think it's hilarious how many people talk about Emily Wilson and haven't read any version of the Odyssey.

all i can think about is how the production and him ghosted the man with the most knowledge on historic greek armour because it didn’t look greek enough 😞

I absolutely agree we should have more women's translations as there is always nuance in translation, but hers was definitely controversial in its own way, changing context of scenes, changing tone without any evidence to back it up (for example, in one scene Telemachus is typically and accurately described as sort of youthful and naive, where she describes him as arrogant and completely changed both that scene and his character)

all of these people talking about wilson’s translation but haven’t actually read the translation, her introduction, or her footnotes where she painstakingly explains every single translational choice made and why with very specific historical, contextual, or linguistic evidence

Emily Wilson it's the first woman to translate in english, in Italy a lot a women have published translation of the odyssey and many other languages already have female translation of the odyssey

if you read her introduction, you would know that she makes it a point to say that she is not the only or first woman to do this and that there have been many partial translations in English and full translations in other languages by women before. she explicitly rejects the framing you're doing here even though your point is correct.

So many people arguing over questions that are addressed in Dr. Wilson's introduction at the beginning of the book.

That’s also not true, Wilson’s translations differs from the other because she tries to retain poetic structure in iambic pentameter from homers didactic hexameter. All translations differ based on the translator, it’s not an objective science. But Wilson’s translation isn’t any more or less feminist than the rest it’s just different in different places.

Translating ancient Greek poetry isn’t a 1 to 1 thing. There are layers of meaning and context, and translators have to make decisions regarding how much weight and space to give different things. My understanding is that Wilson’s translation was different in some regards, but I wouldn’t say better necessarily. You should still read Fagles if you want a modern interpretation.

Hey so this isnt true. She did not like certain aspects of the story, so she decided to change them. Which is wrong.

not correct but the people saying she “made stuff up” are also incorrect. Everyone needs to learn about translation theory
