There was a foreman who lived far away, so he would tell his crew they were to start 2 hours early, no breaks no lunch, so that he could leave early to skip traffic. They did get caught, and everyone got fined. Including apprentices. Don’t break down conditions. Sometimes there’s a delivery or whatever so you work through normal break time, just take your break after you’re done.

Even the other journeymen on site should not allow that to happen. That could never happen on any of our site. As journeymen we don't allow work to even be talked about during breaks

im a strict break taker, dont even skip break to leave early. skipping break is breaking down conditions no matter what. and if you do have one good foreman who needs a task finished asap, I'll take break a little later for a longer break.

I might be wrong but lunch is mandatory but your breaks are not. While yes take you 10 or 15 whatever but there are times you can’t. Breaks are different than lunches.

I agree as someone who’s studying for the altitude test and if I got into the apprenticeship. I would work through my brakes if my boss told me just to take initiative, but at the end of the day, right you’re here for longevity. If you’re being pushed too hard, your body can sometimes break. I see both sides in this scenario.

Unwritten rule I already learned. Get up when your foreman/journeyman you are paired with get up. And I’ve yet to see any of them get up before break is up

I’m a union ironworker apprentice and I’m working with some old heads. We start at 6:30 which means we’re actually starting at six which means I’m getting a phone call parking lot at 5:30 to get the ice and shit

I was a IBEW foreman for 24 years, the only break we didn’t take on my jobs was afternoon break but we left 15 minutes early. Unless some one wanted to take afternoon break then we all took it. Cause it was in our contract.
