Used properly, caffeine can help with: ✅ Alertness ✅ Focus ✅ Reaction time ✅ Strength output ✅ Power ✅ Endurance ✅ Perceived effort during hard sessions Which is why so many firefighters rely on it. Early start? Coffee. Long shift? Coffee. Training session after a rough night? Coffee. But here’s the part a lot of people ignore: Caffeine has a cost if you use it too late in the day. You might fall asleep fine. But that doesn’t mean your sleep quality is fine. Late caffeine can reduce deep sleep, increase restlessness, and leave you feeling like you’ve slept… but not actually recovered. And for firefighters, that matters. Because recovery is where you adapt. It’s where you build muscle. It’s where your nervous system calms down. It’s where you actually get fitter from the training you’ve done. So yes, caffeine can be a brilliant performance tool. But it shouldn’t be something you’re smashing all day just to survive. Use it strategically. Have it before training. Use it when you genuinely need it. But if your sleep is poor, your energy is up and down, or you’re constantly relying on caffeine to get through the day… The answer probably isn’t more coffee. It’s better recovery.
