My gym is open after hours without staff for platinum members. I usually go between 1-4am. It’s so empty, quiet and wonderful

I'm reactivating my gym membership today. It's been a long time. The gym is so confusing because there is so much equipment and I have no idea how use use it properly or even know what I should be doing. I'll probably just start walking the track at first. Maybe there's a worker there who can give direction or advice. I'll try to remember to ask later.

the first time I went to the gym I only used the treadmill and the bike thing and now I can't use anything else because it has become solidified in my brain that the gym = treadmill + bike only 😅

The gym solidifies my central nervous system. The ache in my muscles overpower the thoughts in my head.

I started going to lagree classes. I like going alone so I don’t have to rely on someone else’s presence to keep me motivated BUT I like having other people doing all the same thing with me to make me feel less alone so classes feel more attainable than just a gym session where it’s all chaos and no one is following any particular cohesive plan together. Now, the anxiety still hits before classes because of regular society pressures of how do I look compared to the others? Am I the only one who’s new new at this? Am I going to make a fool of myself because I can’t hold a plank very long? I also have symptoms of POTS and Ehlers Danlos which are two more invisible illnesses on top of autism and adhd so will people think I’m struggling or pausing because I’m weak and out of shape? (Spoiler alert, no one’s watching me but the instructor and I know this but I still have to go through these questions). My therapist told me before I went to my first class that if it didn’t feel welcoming then don’t go back, but when I go to pick out up to 5 things about the class that did feel welcoming and that would make me want to go back. It helped. I still get anxious, but it’s really hard and I’m tired of being the newbie every time and the classes always turn out good and the instructors are super helpful so I’ve successfully attended 6 classes so far. I need to get more passes now but I am looking forward to getting to my next class!

How do you deal with the transition? I find switching places really difficult. I used to stall in the dressing room as a buffer, but it was stressful and taking up space.

Every time I go I always feel so anxious like people are constantly watching and staring at me. I’ve been going daily for several years straight because it’s a part of my routine but I can’t shake the feeling that I’m bringing attention to myself due to how out of place I look.

Yes this. I've been in the gym for two years now and never consistently. I was always mad at myself that I couldn't get comfortable with certain exercises, especially when those that are the most popular and efficient. I always pressured myself to do it anyways and I would feel so bad that one time I almost had a panic attack doing hip thrusts. I'm still at the weight I've been at two years ago while my friend who is disciplined (and neurotypical) is progressing. But recently I've come to conclusion that my goal and her goal are different. What I'm trying to do is help my social anxiety by going, be healthy, make a gym my safe space since I'm already stressed in every other situation, and just overall have fun. It's not an excuse, or at least I don't think it is, because my goal is different. Anyone else relates?
