my theory is that the vessel created by us in the beginning is actually made by gaster, they were always trying to make things in undertale (amalgamations) and were this single monotone sprite, so our vessel may have been put into the lake (the background in the start is LITERALLY water) which may have lured onionsan towards it, which is why gaster’s followers are still prevalent to this day
