NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, has defended her record in office, highlighting what she described as the transformation of the agency from a poorly equipped regulator into one gaining international recognition. Speaking during a press briefing with journalists in Lagos, Adeyeye said she inherited about ₦3.2 billion in liabilities, including ₦1.6 billion in unpaid taxes, about ₦700 million in staff travel and Good Manufacturing Practice-related expenses, and roughly ₦400 million owed contractors. She also said between 70 and 80 per cent of the agency’s equipment was not functioning when she assumed office. Adeyeye said her administration subsequently improved NAFDAC’s regulatory capacity, with the agency attaining Maturity Level 3 in March 2022 and securing international recognition and memberships. She also recalled returning to Nigeria after spending 37 years in the United States, including 30 years as a professor, saying she came back to serve and help change the situation she had found. Reflecting on public service, Adeyeye said, “Some Nigerians have an aversion for service,” adding that the country had been rendered weak by an attitude centred on “what can I get” and “what is in my pocket.” Criticizing what she described as a growing culture of self-interest among Nigerians, Adeyeye said the country’s development has suffered because too many people focus on what they can personally gain from public service. Responding to questions about when she would resign, Adeyeye said the progress recorded under her leadership should provide the answer to those questioning her continued stay in office. #nigerianews #nigeriannews #nafdac
