@hypermobile.work: Your muscles might not actually be “tight” in the traditional sense. In hypermobile bodies, that tightness can often be guarding which is a protective response where your muscles stay switched on to help stabilize joints that don’t have enough inherent support from surrounding tissue. The issue is that over time, this protective tension can become chronic. It can contribute to persistent muscle tightness, feelings of instability, and even pain. So naturally, your first instinct is to stretch it out. And sometimes it helps… or sometimes it makes things worse. That’s because stretching doesn’t always address the root issue, and in some cases, it can even reinforce the problem by encouraging already unstable joints to move further into range. This creates a cycle of tightness, stretching, relief, an more guarding. What the body often needs instead is twofold: First, nervous system regulation, to help reduce the need for protective guarding in the first place. Then, stabilization work, so the joints can rely less on muscular “bracing” and more on supported control. And of course, strength work down the line so we can reinforce these patyerns. When we work with both, the body doesn’t need to stay stuck in that constant state of protective tension. #ehlersdanlos #hypermobile #hypermobility

Sky 😈 :
I was told I shouldn’t stretch before working out bc with hyper mobility our muscles are naturally in a stretched position so we should work out first to tighten them back to normal then stretch after

My back is constantly taking compensation from guarding my ribs. I had them slip April and I’ve been in this cycle. Chronic by now I assume. I can’t get my body to relan

I was told I was hyper mobile by doctors and PTs all my life and they never explained what that meant so I was like yeah I’m flexible. When I figured it out I was like OH! So this pain isn’t normal?

Finally started physical therapy because of this. Now I’m lifting an empty barbell and holding out 2 pound weights to TRAIN my body where to be instead of trying to build muscle.
