I put them in trash cans with holes in the bottom. I put a little soil to cover the seed and as the plant grows I put more on top to cover and carry on till it’s at the top. Then I put a tarp out to harvest, tip it out, pick up the spuds and then you’re done with no digging or weeding.

For potatoes you should wait until the plants in top start to die. But not toooo long or you’ll get moldy ones 😬😂

I've always dug down in the ground to get up potatoes. literally never pulled any up from the stems lol
