Do you ever feel that you want to escape from your life because you're overwhelmed and exhausted from giving yourself away? It's a life you may have intentionally chosen or, perhaps, it chose you. You may be faithfully caring for an aged parent that lives with you, tirelessly showing up to your health care career, or working as a single parent to make ends meet all the while raising your children. Now your life has become too consuming and emotionally draining. You consider your effort small in comparison to the great need. You think you can do better, and tomorrow you'll get to those thousand other things that need to be done. The goal of caring is to care well. You love this person or this job, and because you do, you're willing to do good and hard work. Oftentimes, though, the person or position for whom you're caring, slowly brings with it more and more anxiety and agitation. Much energy and thought, and perhaps too much, is given away. You criticize yourself for your inability to be and do more, and in doing so, become consumed and worn out. Is it wise to wear out before the job is done? Compassion fatigue brings with it exhaustion, a negative view of your life, anger, bitterness, and, if all things stay the same, a loss of your identity. How did your innocent and kind intentions turn into a displeasurable burden? You require more of yourself than is necessary and in doing so, give yourself unnecessary stress and anxiety. It's possible to guard your mind, emotions, and physical well-being as well as to lovingly and diligently care for those people and jobs to whom you're committed. Taking care of yourself isn't selfish in the sense that you're proud and full of yourself. Rather, it's stewarding your energy and emotions to pace yourself to care well over long periods of time. It's a wise way to live and helps you to keep your mind full of peace and your days full of joy.
