A 26-year-old jet skier was riding under Malta's famed "Kissing Elephants" rock archway around 7 p.m. when the formation suddenly gave way, pinning him underwater, the Times of Malta reported. A 27-year-old woman riding with him was hospitalized with serious injuries. It was a freak accident no one saw coming. The collapse happened shortly after a 32-year-old tourist had dived from the rock formation; that diver was rescued by a passing boat and wasn't hospitalized. Investigators later pieced together what happened — and how many people were involved — using surveillance footage from a nearby floating beach club. A crane on a barge was brought in to remove the debris before divers recovered the man's body. None of those involved have been publicly identified. The "Kissing Elephants" has wowed visitors for generations. The tour group Outdoor Explorers Malta called the collapse "an immeasurable tragedy." "It is with deep sadness that we must report that one person has lost their life," they wrote.
