@markadamsdogs: This was filmed last Friday at Cedarwood Animal Shelter in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The man is Robert. He's 68 years old. Retired electrician. He lost his Cocker Spaniel, a dog named Bess, on Monday after thirteen years together. Bess had been with Robert through his retirement, through his wife Gloria's passing four years ago, through every quiet evening since. She was the last living daily connection to the life he'd built. Robert's son Michael suggested the shelter visit. Not to replace Bess, Michael said. Just to get his father out of the house. Just to be somewhere other than the rooms that felt too empty. Robert told the shelter staff at the front desk that he wasn't there to adopt. Just walking around. They nodded and asked if he'd like to meet some of the dogs. He said he supposed so. A volunteer named Tara brought Robert to the senior dog room without making a big deal of it. Just walked him there naturally. In one of the visiting areas, Tara brought out a dog named Cleo. An eleven-year-old Spaniel mix. Cleo had been surrendered eight months earlier when her previous owner moved into a care facility. Gray around her entire face. Moved with the careful deliberateness of an older dog who'd learned patience. Robert walked into the room and stopped. Cleo looked almost exactly like Bess. Same coloring. Same soft ears. Same way of tilting her head when she looked at you. Robert sat down on the bench. Tara said she watched his face change completely. Like something inside him cracked open. Cleo walked to him slowly. Put her front paws up on his knees and looked up at him. Robert bent forward and put his face in his hands. Then he felt Cleo's paws on his knees and looked up. He wrapped both arms around her and held on for a long time without saying anything. When he finally spoke, his voice was very quiet. He said: "She looks just like my girl." Tara told us: "I didn't say anything. I just let them be together. Sometimes that's the only right thing to do." Robert sat with Cleo for almost an hour. Before he left, he asked Tara how long Cleo had been there. Tara told him eight months. Nobody had come for her. Robert came back Saturday morning with Michael. Adopted Cleo that afternoon. He told Michael in the car on the way home: "She's not Bess. She never will be. But she needs someone and I need something to take care of. That's enough reason."
