Eight days ago, Aaron and Bero responded to a situation at a commercial property that escalated unexpectedly. Aaron was seriously injured during the response. He was transported immediately and went into surgery that evening. He's been in the hospital recovering since. Bero was taken back to the K9 facility after the incident. Staff reported that Bero was severely unsettled. Wouldn't eat normally. Paced constantly. Wouldn't engage with other handlers. Aaron's supervisor, Sergeant Donna Reyes, advocated with hospital administration for four days to get a visit approved. Hospital policy didn't typically allow animals beyond the ground floor. Administration made an exception. Bero came through the hospital room door on a leash held by fellow K9 officer Deputy Ramirez. The moment Bero saw Aaron in the bed, he pulled hard toward him. Not frantic. Purposeful. Ramirez released the leash. Bero jumped onto the bed — but carefully. Deliberately avoiding Aaron's injured arm.
