genuinely a lost art, one of my favourite things to look at is engineering drawing

counter argument: engineers now are better than back then because they were able to create tools that makes work easier

they didn't have to deal with conflicting dimensions tho

you guys stopped drawing? we still start with engineering drawing before CAD here 🤗

Engineers today are smarter, and resourceful. Engineers then were heavily disciplined and limited

They had managers who knew what it takes to do your job. Designers AND engineers were separate jobs

ngl i think i would've been better at drafting than i am at cad

No they not. It just took ages to finish project.

cad is the exact same as drawing it’s just with technology

Engineers back then were HEAVILY specialized in single disciplines. Nowadays, In not just a CAD drafter but also program manager, technician, and a bunch of other roles

It’s because we use computers to think for us. Back then they had to figure most shit out haha

Same in SWE. I rely heavily on things like intellisense when programming but dudes back then were writing on punch cards 😭

it was a crazy feeling when I went to school for engineering and I wanted to do the big schematics and drawings and discovered nobody does that anymore

I want to do macro grand scale projects in engineering rather than micro projects like designing a mechanical component or circuit. what engineering major i should do?

Wrong! Modern CAD has advanced society way quicker look at Space X CAD and CAM software have made prototyping a lot quicker and efficient and freed up engineers time to invent/ innovate new solutions it takes one engineer what use to take 75…… also the F-22 raptor which was made in cad is way more advanced than the SR-71!

no they just had more of them. 2 guys can cad the entire sr71 black bird in the time it takes 70 of the. to draw out all of the black bird.

Fat Stooge Cuts A Rug :
hand drafting is still a required class, although it is more so for understanding the concept.
I think the fact they were doing calculations with slide rules and programming on punch cards is the more impressive feat. That is insane skill and they definitely had better math skills than we engineers have today
