Old Technique Xiang Yun Sha – The Complete Process of Ancient Mud-Dye Silk Xiang Yun Sha (Fragrant Cloud Silk) is an ancient textile craft from Southern China, known as the “mysterious fabric of the East.” It is created through a long and intricate process involving sunlight, river mud, and plant-based dye extracted from the shuhu (Dioscorea cirrhosa) root. The process begins with high-quality silk fabric, which is washed, sized, and dried. The silk is then soaked in a plant dye made from crushed shuhu roots, rich in natural tannins. After soaking, the fabric is stretched out under the sun to dry. This soaking–sun-drying cycle is repeated dozens of times until the silk becomes firm, glossy, and richly saturated. Next comes the most iconic step: mud dyeing. Artisans spread fine river mud evenly across the fabric and lay it flat on grass under direct sunlight. As the fabric interacts with the mud, dye, and sunlight, a natural oxidation reaction occurs. The color slowly transforms from golden to deep brown, forming the signature “Xiang Yun color.” Once dried, the fabric is washed, soaked again, and repeatedly sun-dried until the ideal texture and color are achieved. After weeks of careful work, the finished Xiang Yun Sha becomes durable, breathable, naturally UV-resistant, and beautifully lustrous — a textile that becomes softer and shinier with every wear, embodying the harmony of nature and traditional craftsmanship. #handmade #craft #handcraft #oldtechnology
