@vmnewsdaily: A major security breakthrough at the Beitbridge Port of Entry saw the Border Management Authority (BMA) seize explosive cables concealed inside luggage on an interlink bus travelling from Malawi. The discovery was made on Saturday after a BMA Border Guard flagged suspicious luggage during a routine inspection. On closer examination, explosive cables—classified as illegal explosives under South African law—were found hidden inside a bag of rice. The South African Police Service (South African Police Service) Bomb Disposal Unit and the Hawks (Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation) were immediately called to secure the scene and take over investigations. Authorities estimate the explosives to be worth around R100 000, according to SAPS Explosives Unit members. A Malawian man was arrested and is currently in custody at Musina Police Station as investigators probe the origin of the explosives, their intended destination, and possible links to organised crime networks. Acting BMA Commissioner Major General David Chilembe praised the Border Guards for their alertness, saying the interception highlights the authority’s commitment to securing South Africa’s borders and stopping dangerous goods from entering the country. “This interception is a testament to the vigilance and professionalism of our Border Guards,” Chilembe said. The Border Management Authority (Border Management Authority) says it will continue intelligence-led operations and work closely with law enforcement to combat smuggling of explosives, firearms, drugs and other contraband. 💬 Do you think South Africa’s borders are tight enough to stop dangerous smuggling attempts like this? #BMA #Beitbridge #SAPS #Hawks #BorderSecurity
