Look back and most likely you’ll find that your life has been marked by moments of hardship that have caused deep sorrow, but also moments when you’ve experienced great joy. Humankind tries desperately to avoid moments of sorrow, yet fails. Why? It’s because sorrow is written into the human condition. Heartbreak, sickness, the inability to overcome things, and death are common to every person. How is it then, that a person can have joy connected to sorrow? Even greater, how is it possible to be joyful in sorrow? Joy and sorrow are inextricably connected. For example, joy can turn to sorrow, when a person you love becomes gravely ill. Similarly, if you have encountered great difficulty in becoming pregnant, your deep longing can turn to joy when you find out you're pregnant. The heart wants what the heart wants, so it's easy to be tossed along between joy and sorrow in life because of met and unmet desires. It requires purposeful intention, not feelings or emotions, to look for joy in the sorrowful times. When in sorrow you must turn your gaze to something that has the power to anchor the soul in hope and there in find joy. It's not to deny that there are real trials in your life, but to anchor yourself mentally and emotionally on something that is stronger than the outcome of your trial. This is not optimism. It is choosing to hope, regardless of the outcome. For those in Christ, we hold onto the hope that the afflictions we endure are light and temporary in comparison to the everlasting glory to come. Our hope rests, not in the circumstances we face, but in Christ himself. Consequently, the sorrow we endure is not meaningless, but serves to refine our faith. The magnificence of what He himself has promised is beyond comprehending, so we do not grieve as those who have no hope! We are able to say as the hymnist wrote, ‘It is well with my soul!’ His promise is that One day he himself will wipe away every tear of ours and give us joy everlasting.
