I understand what your goal was here but the message really downplays how important we are in the OR. I’m a PA in ortho, assist in a ton of surgeries . My surgeon and I have had a lot of side by side training , he trusts me and relies on me to do a lot during surgeries. Including graft prep, closing, anchor placement, drilling tunnels, etc. Regularly he tells me he hates when he has to be in the OR without me. His days are slower and generally just not as smooth. Do I perform the surgery alone hell no! But I know those surgeries inside and out and heavily participate beyond just “ retracting”

I mean even a student can “just retract or suture”, surgical PAs can do a lot more than just that!

The responsibilities of the PA or NP in surgery vary WIDELY depending on specialty and specific surgeon. Surgical PA of 20+ years here and some surgeons won’t let you put on a steri-strip alone while others allow a much more hands on assist helping and performing some integral parts of the case.

I am a PA working in Dermatology and perform skin cancer surgery solo, every single day in our clinic. Have been for years alongside our mohs surgeon.

I remember in the paper someone wrote an article called “The Ghost Doctor: Who is doing your surgery?” I have assisted on 15,000 joint replacements and have never done one.

Retracting and suturing? With all due respect a good surgical PA can do a great deal more than that. Do we perform the surgery solo? No. But I myself can harvest vein, assist in all cutdowns and exposure by handling the bovie and tying off vessels, do percutaneous access and peripheral interventions. i’ve seen PAs that perform the ligation of the appendix, perform hysteroscopes, put in robotic trocars, and access the abdominal cavity. In IR the PA performs a large percentage of the procedures as the primary operator. It all depends on your skill level and the comfort and confidence that your surgeon has in you.

This should be posted on Reddit. Many pa’s are claiming they are doing the surgery or majority of the surgery.

Nope. As a PA, I've some surgeons in certain subspecialties be comfortable with a PA performing certain parts of the surgery (i.e. endoscopic vein harvesting in CTS, abdominal insufflation). BUT, the surgeon is always in the room

NPs can legally perform surgeries without a MD present now. They have been performing liposuctions and other procedures since last summer.
