@dreelegend: The Witch’s Hat Pavilion (officially the West End Pavilion or McIlvain Pavilion) is a historic brownstone overlook structure located at the summit of Neversink Mountain in Reading. It is most recognizable for its steep, cone-shaped roofline, which gives it the appearance of a pointed witch’s hat. Built in 1892, the pavilion was originally constructed to honor William McIlvain, a local hiking enthusiast who frequently used the site as a resting point while exploring the mountain. The pavilion was once part of the larger Neversink Mountain Hotel resort complex, which operated as an exclusive 19th-century summer destination. The resort featured a grand five-story, 166-room hotel that attracted wealthy visitors from cities such as Philadelphia and New York. However, the hotel’s success was short-lived, as it was destroyed in 1905 by a major fire, believed to be the result of arson. While the hotel fell into ruin, the stone pavilion survived, becoming one of the few remaining physical traces of the mountain’s early tourism era. Today, the Witch’s Hat Pavilion sits within the 900-acre Neversink Mountain Preserve, managed by Berks Nature. It offers sweeping views of Reading, Mount Penn, and the iconic Reading Pagoda. Access requires a moderate 2.2 to 3-mile hike that passes through forested trails and remnants of historic structures, including old railroad trestle ruins and the Centennial Springs Hotel pond. The site now has a quiet, atmospheric feel, with local volunteers helping preserve the structure and maintain its trails while keeping graffiti under control. #pennsylvania #usa🇺🇸

Wouldn't really call it abandoned since it's a memorial and people visit it all the time.
