@themoviemagick: Orson Welles warned that modern movies were getting less original and engaging because filmmakers and directors were watching too many movies. He argues that this was causing movies to be similar to each other and ruining the creativity of directors. For Welles it was more important to read books, philosophy, ideas and explore the through cinema than watch movies. #orsonwelles #cinema
i don’t disagree with the statement but i would also argue that most filmmakers today haven’t done enough of their homework

Tarantino is prime example. his films are mostly compendiums of other filmmakers shots & plots

This is the same with books and writing. All art is built on homage and shared references

you forgot the end of his quote where he calls himself paradoxical because he’s genuinely enjoyed films by creators overly soaked in film references lol

This is the exact same problem you have with other medium. Music is the perfect example. You could spend your time making more experimental music that’s your thing, but you wouldn’t have a market for it. So if you wanna make a living, you have to do what’s popular

I've watched citizen kane. The movie is good and i was strugglingso hard to stay awake for entire movie. So, the movies makers studied to make sure the viewers will not get bored watching every movie.

Orson Welles is like a teacher who says really harsh shit but you know deep down he wants you to improve and get better.

David Lynch surprisingly thinks the same. He apparently watched few movies and only liked the works of a handful of directors. Said he felt it would stifle his creativity. Or like, subtly ‘force’ his creativity in a certain direction.
