@calmmoneycoach: Give While You're Living Living Inheritance in Canada? Most people never actually choose. They leave it all behind by default, and never get to be there when it lands. Here's the part nobody says out loud. You spent 40 years being careful. That instinct doesn't switch off the day you retire. So most retirees barely touch what they built. The average retiree with $500,000 draws down about 10% of it in 20 years, and 1 in 3 die with more than they started (EBRI). But a gift at 30 is a down payment. A foothold. The same money at 60 is a number on a statement. In Canada it's already happening. 1 in 3 first-time buyers now get family help to buy, averaging $115,000 (CIBC, 2024). One rule though, and it's the whole thing. Fund your own retirement first. Cover your essentials, plan to 95, keep a real long-term care reserve. Then give from the surplus, never from the security. Give with a warm hand or a cold one. Just make sure your own hand is full enough first. Not advice, just the math and the trade-offs. Save this for someone who needs the nudge.

Such an important topic. A gift to a 30 year old child can mean the difference between them having another kid, being able to own a home, or start a business. An inheritance to a 60 year old child who is retiring themselves is probably not as life-changing.

As a recipient of such a gift with two small kids at the time, this meant getting into a family home, and over time saving on all of the bank interest we would be paying. Instead our earnings paid for things for our family. That gift saved 100’s of thousands over the years, and helped us enjoy life

Another perspective... My father invested money his whole life. I wished he had spent this money on himself in retirement especially when health issues developed. When it came time to close his estate most went back to the government in taxes. My message would be to invest in your wellbeing and in family. 💙

would there be any tax benefit to get your parents to assign their will directly to your kids instead of going through you? ie skip a generation to the people who could use the money?

My mom sold her home and gave it to her 2 daughters but we are in our early 60’s. I will be giving it much sooner with her inheritance to me when she is gone.

@Brian | Calm Money Coach any experience with gifting/inheritance across borders? Example, my parents are American and I’m a dual living in Canada.
