@cindydoedee: Day 71 of boycotting conventional grocery stores: one of my favorite dishes growing up was 炸酱面 zha jiang mian; i saw it featured in a chinese period drama and begged my mom to make it for me! it's been really fun to combine all these things i'm doing: boycotting grocery stores, recreating traditional dishes from Northern China using local Bay Area wild ingredients, foraging, and eating with my friends. this is the spice of life!! Foraging has made me think much more intentionally about my food systems and how I want to consume. It's led me to understand better how interspecies relationships work, and how my ancestors depended on the land. My goal isn't to be perfect, but I am definitely learning a lot about my food and how I want to interact with the world through this boycott. As a reminder, my 3 goals are to: 1) develop a closer relationship with my food source, whether that is foraging directly from the land, growing my own food, exchanging with others who grow/catch/raise, or shopping locally 2) support local businesses, makers, growers, catchers, raisers, and sellers; Diverting from the industrial food complex as much as possible. a handful of powerful companies control the majority market share of ~80% of groceries bought regularly by Americans. These companies dominate every part of the food supply chain, with the power to lobby politically as well, all while farmers are some of the lowest paid workers and our food worsens. 3) reduce plastic consumption

I think what makes things hard for those of us in the Bay Area especially is that foraging is outright banned in most open spaces and parks here. I’m in Marin and I know that we are only technically allowed to forage a certain amount of mushrooms and berries in Point Reyes. Otherwise, everything else, everywhere else is banned here. And county rangers and park staff will give out fines, not to mention all the residents that will call authorities if you’re picking anything even if it’s outside of their yard. The way people view foraging here is very weird and it borders on paranoia and gate keeping.
