Maaan there was a period on Tumblr where dozens and dozens of artists were selling comms that looked IDENTICAL to Pheberoni’s art style, often using the exact same brushes. Was just reminded of that.

the amount of artists just straight up drawing in YOUR art style under the guise of “the 2lainn effect” and making money off it feels super weird to me. there’s referencing and learning, then there’s js plagiarism

I think there’s also a problem with people not even crediting or acknowledging where they’re taking inspiration from :p I can see why it would be annoying to have a unique style/OC that you built from many different resources, research, practice, etc. and someone has the audacity to copy it completely and pretend its their idea or process 😭

1000% agree. Artists should be referencing from a ton of different sources. If you pull from one reference, and it’s just another artists work, that’s pretty much just copying, which can be fine, but selling your work and knowing it’s only popular because your emulating somebody else is not blameless.

I have always wondered what it would be like to be one of the designers that get mass copied on toyhouse. People just do it so brazenly whenever a designer with a unique style comes onto the scene. I've been on toyhouse for 7 years and it's just part of the ecosystem.

Noooo that’s so understanding… I once found on discord of this notice where the big artist who created the discord made a statement not to use her colour palettes to make ocs.. but I looked at the example she used (someone’s oc who got reported), the colours were greyscale with a hint of pale green/blue 😭 I understand you completely

Most people, myself included, learn the importance of visual libraries way too late, and I’m glad that finally someone decided to shed light on the actual reasoning of this phenomenon. I have been exposed to this discourse only on the art style side & not OCs, and I just wish everyone was as cool about it as you. As an amateur artist I recognize that it is due lack of knowledge & I feel that these artists should be redirected to simple art style studies and learning what they actually like about the style so they can end up with something they’re truly happy with! But making $500 off plagiarism is a bit cray-cray 😭

my two cents regarding artists who vehemently attack referencing is that theres gonna be a lot of style/inspiration overlap out there. obviously #thatperson was blatantly stealing but i think lotsa people online will jump to cry plagiarism when its simply a case of two artists coming from similar backgrounds because theres only so much media to go around. its very different with character design but style itself can be a tiny bit of a gray area imo

I’m still lowkey baffled by the lack of accountability considering how blatant the plagiarism was, bc that IS plagiarism fr,, I think it’s obvious that you’re a huge inspo to me and people in my TikTok audience compare my art to yours a lot (which I feel is kinda a disservice to you lol) but I do just think we have very similar tastes/backgrounds in media and fandom but have different styles as a whole 🙏 I’m so sorry about this whole ordeal though, being inspired is one thing and there will always be overlap when you run in the same circles, but completely ripping off someone’s style or designs without attempting to branch out is just disrespectful and unproductive 😔 ✌️I hope you’re doing okay goat ❤️

man despite there being so many artists out there, i really think the community is incredibly tight-knit, which really amplifies the artstyle echo chamber, especially when there’s so much heat for anything that’s overly different

I think there’s a huge difference between referencing/studying from somebody’s artstyle VS just completely copying somebody’s work. Like your work has helped me grow my art a TON (god bless the beige background), and now I’m at a point where I’ve been working to push my art in another direction. You can learn from someone and how they work/draw without just basically ripping off numerous of their designs

and there’s a long-term issue with this too. i think people on the internet love to consume and then ditch things when they become oversaturated. all your hard work of developing your art style over the years and even your business can be jeopardised over time because of people claiming your art style and ideas. buyers could then think your art isn’t unique anymore, when you’re literally the original
