The speed of light is one of the most important fundamental physical constants, playing a key role in understanding the structure of the universe. It is denoted by the Latin letter c and has a strictly defined value in a vacuum: 299,792,458 meters per second, or approximately 300,000 kilometers per second. This value is so important to science that today it defines the unit of length, the meter. The speed of light is considered the maximum possible speed of transmission of information, energy, and any physical interactions in nature. Light is electromagnetic radiation that propagates as waves and simultaneously exhibits the properties of a stream of particles—photons. In a vacuum, photons travel at a constant speed, but when passing through various substances, such as air, water, or glass, the speed of light decreases. This occurs not because the photons themselves lose their ability to move, but because of their interactions with the atoms of the substance. For example, light travels at approximately 225,000 kilometers per second in water, and approximately 200,000 kilometers per second in glass.Today, the speed of light is one of the most accurately measured physical quantities and underlies modern physics, astronomy, cosmology, and many technologies. It is used in satellite navigation systems, laser technology, telecommunications, and in studying the structure of the universe. Despite decades of research, the speed of light remains a crucial boundary defining the fundamental laws of nature, and there is still no experimentally confirmed way to transmit information or material objects faster than this speed.
