I just go to failure dang near every compound exercise and emphasize time under tension

I add one rep to one set each week, tossing that out there for anyone else who progresses slowly.

I've never thought about the percentage of weight change between the compound and isolated movements. Makes a lot of sense! Will be thinking of this from now on.

I normally just add 5% increase for isolation exercises too instead of 33%. It’s much more manageable that way 👍

it's worth noting that you can also reduce rest time. most exercises you want to have 90-120 seconds in between sets. for something super low weight/high reps where you can't progress in weight yet and you're feeling capped off, do your standard weight at the same rep range but cut your rest time down to force more overload.

As a retired ballerina, weight lifting was always discouraged and getting into this world has been super intimidating. This was so helpful. Thank you

Oooookay thank you! I’d been struggling mentally at how long it was taking to improve the weights for my isolation exercises compare to the compound ones and that helps clear things up so much!

The compound exercise breakdown means if I start at 100lbs for 8 reps, I would be able to bench 1000lbs by year 10! Progressive overload can’t be the main driver in getting bigger cause bodybuilders would be lifting 5000lbs and be enormous! 😂😂

Why not just make the weight increment smaller? Like 1-2lb

Can you expand more on time under tension? Going slower as an option?
