@drjessicaknurick: The goal of the Trump administration is to significantly shrink nutrition assistance programs. Last July, we saw the largest cuts to SNAP in history. And since then, millions of people have lost SNAP benefits in the states where data are available, including about 800,000 children. This was explicitly outlined in Project 2025, which called for making SNAP harder to access through stricter work requirements, tighter eligibility rules, fewer waivers, and other administrative barriers that would push people out of the program. And SNAP food restrictions are just another tool to do the same thing. Because when you add state-by-state restrictions to what people can buy with SNAP, you make the program more complicated, more expensive to administer, and harder for families to use. And when public benefit programs become more complicated, fewer eligible people receive the help they qualify for. That is the goal. And we know they are not concerned about the consequences because they canceled the annual federal food security survey, which is one of the primary tools we have used for decades to measure hunger and food insecurity in America. So they are making it harder for people to access food assistance while also making it harder for us to measure the harm caused by those policies. These restrictions are not about health. They are another tool to further reduce access to a federal nutrition assistance program that helps families afford groceries.
