@survival.vietnamese: Vietnamese and Khmer are linguistic cousins! Both belong to the Austroasiatic family, which means they share a common ancestor and a core of basic words like tay/day (hand), con/koun (child), and thêm/thaem (extra). Over centuries, Vietnamese developed tones through long contact with Chinese, while Khmer stayed non-tonal. Vietnamese also trimmed down toward short, single-syllable words, whereas Khmer kept its longer forms with prefixes. So when the words sound alike, it’s not borrowing — it’s a family resemblance that goes back thousands of years.
