My mom was worried about her house being messy before a Christmas party last year and I reassured her it was fine because “not everyone is as judgmental as you and probably won’t notice.”

I grew up being criticized and made fun of for literally every single, tiny thing I did. I have agoraphobia now so yay.

I feel I have to be perfect or “picturesque” all of the time. She would constantly talk about how I looked or what I wore, my failures and shortcomings with EVERYONE she could get on the phone. My perfectionism stems from her

I agree that parental criticism can lead to a fear of being perceived, but I also think that fear has a lot to do with living in a punitive surveillance state. Nearly everything we do is now recorded and subject to public scrutiny. People increasingly go out of their way to demean and attack anyone they view as different, while the safety of anonymity is becoming a thing of the past. Even in our own homes, we’re tracked, monitored, and picked apart. The fear isn’t just of being seen; it’s of being seen, judged, and punished. Those are very real concerns right now. Of course people don’t want to go outside when strangers are recording them with Meta glasses to make cruel TikTok videos or uploading photos of them to Reddit or Telegram to mock their appearance. Bad parents are just the tip of the iceberg in a society addicted to judgement.

What’s wild is that I always thought *I* was the weird one for not being so nitpicky and judgmental of others. I thought I wasn’t paying enough attention or something.

This and triangulation was completely what I grew up with. I never knew why I hate public attention. I can't ever just "be" in public or around anyone without anxiety over their perception.
