I was a smart kid in high school and I STILL struggled with the food thing. I didn't understand how to estimate how many snacks I'd need until mid Junior year/senior year. My brain just COULD NOT picture how hungry I'd be. It was too abstract. Remember your high schooler's brains are still growing too.

When I had snacks in my classroom I was bombarded all day. Students would come from other classes to grab a snack. And it gets expensive feeding them!

Bathrooms. So bad. Parents want their children to have freedom to go as they please, but 4 out of 5 students are going to the bathroom 6-7 times a DAY and are spending 10, 15, or 20+ minutes in there every time😭

Social media glorifies teachers feeding kids snacks. In reality I have 200 students and if I fed them every time they asked I would be spending hundreds a month on them. Every once in a while I will give a kid a granola bar if they seem like they’re going to pass out but I have had to set boundaries.

The bathroom thing drives me nuts, especially as a supply teacher. I HATE having to call the office to request they page the student to come back to class. There’s a lineup of kids waiting to use the bathroom and I’m only permitted to let one out at a time!!!!!

We used smart pass this year and it was amazing. Students are tracked in the hallway and have x amount of passes and x amount of time allowed, so if they go over in a day they aren’t allowed to go anymore. We have meetings with parents and get to pull up the data to show them how often they’re out of the classroom. Some parents have actually set higher standards than we do.

I work at a high school and the hallways are always so busy! I remember it being like a ghost town when I was in HS (I graduated 2019)

I do not ever give the kids snacks! Too much liability, what if they get sick or have an allergy. Plus way too expensive. There is however, a school pantry for students in need. And also vending machines for any student that are free stuff like an apple or crustables, etc. but yet the kids will still ask and beg.

Sometimes I feel like I’m still a teenager, but then I meet an actual teenager and I realize I am in fact 29. I get old so fast, I am so glad to not be a teen any more lmao 😂

If you never hand out food from the get go, students will never ask. This has at least been my experience. I MIGHT hand out food to a late bus rider, but other than that, nope.
