In 2006, helicopters were able to land on the mountaintop near the temple itself, giving visitors a truly unique opportunity to experience this UNESCO World Heritage monument from above. Our flight crossed the spectacular Dangrek Mountain Range, passing over Banteay Chhmar, Oddar Meanchey Province, and hundreds of kilometers of Cambodia’s northern border. We also flew over Anlong Veng, an area closely connected with the final years of the Khmer Rouge, before reaching the sacred mountain of Preah Vihear. As we approached, the ancient temple slowly emerged through the clouds, appearing like a heavenly palace above the earth. It was a breathtaking sight that I will never forget. Sadly, during the border conflict in December 2025, Cambodian authorities reported that parts of Preah Vihear Temple were damaged during military operations in the area.
