This is Melbourne’s most talked about new restaurant. ⭐️ Cote Basque is a French-Basque inspired restaurant located on Crossley St, Melbourne CBD. It’s the first new restaurant from Andrew McConnell and Jo McGann since Gimlet. The team is also behind Supernormal, Marion & Cutler. They’ve taken over a renowned Melbourne dining site, previously home to Pellegrini’s buffet restaurant, Tavola Freddo Cantina and Becco. A lot of the original 1950s dining room has been retained, including its tiered layout, terrazzo floors and timber panelling alongside a new playful 16m mural. Côte Basque means “Basque Coast” in French, while also nodding to the famous former New York restaurant La Côte Basque. The menu centres around seafood and meat cooked over wood fire and charcoal, including Rohne beef, which is served at only a handful of restaurants in Australia and dry aged in house for around a month. ⭐️ Sydney Rock oysters, cidre vinegar mignonette - Very fresh and a good size. ⭐️ Potato bread - Crispy outside, soft inside and almost pastry-like. ✔️ Bluefin tuna belly - Nice dressing, but the tuna was a little stringy. ✔️ Socca - Strong cheese flavour and a little oily. ✔️ Steak tartare, Tasmanian paprika - Very paprika forward and different. The sides were a little dry. ⭐️ Calamari, chickpeas - Delicious dressed in its ink. Somewhere between tender and slightly tough. ✔️ Roast duck, Madeira prunes - Tender, slightly crisp skin. ⭐️ Rohne beef eye fillet - Perfectly cooked, great crust. ⭐️ Hand cut chips, aioli - Faultless. ✔️ Butter leaf salad, mustard vinaigrette ⭐️ Chocolate soufflé - Soft and gooey in the centre without feeling undercooked. Reviews have been mixed, including from friends who went the day before, so maybe lower expectations worked in our favour because we really enjoyed it. My main concern is how closely packed the tables are, although we had a great spot with no neighbours. Service was lovely, they offered half portions when we over ordered (unsure if typical), and prices felt pretty standard. Only a few weeks in, the vibe is already fantastic, buzzing with a full house on a Tuesday.#creatorsearchinsights #localplacestoeat
