I have always heard the brothers Karkof is the best book ever written. I’m surprised you did not name it.

That's pretty heavy reading for kids! The most intense things that we had to read was Edgar Allen Poe 😅

In fairness, that sounds like a tough but good education. I hope that the 'chore' aspect of this requirement doesn't turn the young people against reading for enlightenment and pleasure!

In Switzerland its much less. war and peace is impossible, but i read the most of those book in private, with pleasure. well, not tolstoi or turgenev. too boring. but gogol, bulgakov, Dostojewski, sokolov were huge fan.

It was the same in Romania many years ago. We had to read a lot of books on the summer break and write about them, our impressions and thoughts

This chore (summer books) was the beginning of my life long love for reading! Those who were lucky to have the Soviet education would probably agree with me. My childhood summers were full of adventure because I had many books to read ❤️

I’d read all these (except the Griboyedov) by the time I was 14 - admittedly in English translation. I had a thing for Russian literature.

It's the same thing in Serbia, it's reading material for high school. Even the selection of books is almost the same.
