@lucilletherescuecat: margaret has a reputation but she’s the sweetest thing to me when not in an FHS flare up! if i pet her, she goes into one, so her rubbing her face on my hand is as far as she can go 🥲 the lesson in self control for me over the past year has been very important *edit to add: margaret has feline hyperesthesia syndrome! it’s honestly a heartbreaking condition that turns a cat’s own skin into pain they can’t escape. even a gentle pet can suddenly feel like a horrible electric shock or burning sensation 😭 what makes me very sad is that often these cats will hiss, swat, or bite when pet, and people a lot of the times think they’re being mean or b!tchy but the whole time they are trapped in a blind panic, desperately trying to stop what can feel like torture. margaret was thought to be a bad cat for the first half year of her life until a vet brought up the possibility of it…. i had never heard it before! it’s been a year and a half of learning more and educating myself on this, but margaret now has a wonderful neurology and veterinary behavior team at @amc_ny if your vet isn’t familiar with FHS (many aren’t) you can try a veterinary behaviorist or a neurologist who can prescribe specific medications to soothe their misfiring nerves and help them have a high quality of life!!!! #fyp #catsoftiktok #cattok
