@thecreditsurgeon: If I had to start over with a 450 credit score, here's exactly what I'd do to work toward the 700s Step 1: Pull all 3 credit reports (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion) and review every account for errors, collections, late payments, charge-offs, repossessions, or duplicate accounts. Step 2: Highlight any inaccurate or unverifiable information. Don't dispute everything at once focus on the accounts that have the biggest impact or contain incorrect information. Step 3: Bring any active past due accounts current if possible and avoid creating new late payments. Your payment history is one of the biggest factors affecting your score. Step 4: Lower your credit card utilization. Aim to keep balances below 10% of your credit limits, and below 30% at a minimum if you can't get under 10% right away. Step 5: Stop applying for unnecessary credit. Every hard inquiry can have an impact, and too many applications can make rebuilding more difficult. Step 6: Build positive payment history by making every payment on time and keeping older accounts open when it makes sense. Step 7: Monitor your credit monthly, track changes, and adjust your strategy based on updates from the credit bureaus. The biggest mistake? Most people try random credit hacks instead of following a consistent strategy. Credit improvement takes time, but the right approach can make a significant difference.
