Otumfoɔ Opoku Ware II, born Matthew Kwaku Adusei Poku on 30 November 1919 in Kumase, was the 15th Asantehene. Raised in the Royal Oyoko family under strong Christian values, he received his education at Anglican schools, later attending Adisadel College before training as a surveyor and eventually qualifying as a barrister after further studies in the United Kingdom. Before ascending the Golden Stool, he served with distinction in the Public Works Department, the Asantehene’s Lands Office, and later as a lawyer. He contributed significantly to the planning and construction of schools, public buildings, and major institutions, including lands for Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Prempeh College, and Opoku Ware School. In 1968, he served as Ghana’s Commissioner for Transport and Communications and became the first President of the African Civil Aviation Commission. Following the death of Otumfoɔ Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, he was enstooled as Asantehene in 1970. During his nearly 29-year reign, he guided Asanteman through periods of political instability while maintaining neutrality and promoting peace, reconciliation, and national unity. His intervention after Ghana’s disputed 1992 elections helped ease political tensions. Otumfoɔ Opoku Ware II was also an internationally respected statesman who met world leaders, including Queen Elizabeth II, Pope John Paul II, and Fidel Castro, while promoting Asante culture abroad through exhibitions such as “Asante: Kingdom of Gold.” He strongly supported education, land administration, and healthcare, including the establishment of Ghana’s second medical school at KNUST. Otumfoɔ Opoku Ware II passed away suddenly on 25 February 1999, shortly after his final public engagement at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. His death followed a period of declining health after the loss of his wife, Nana Akua Afriyie, in 1996. He is remembered as a visionary monarch, accomplished lawyer, diplomat, and peacemaker whose reign was marked by wisdom, humility, and selfless service. His legacy continues through the Manhyia Palace Museum, the Otumfoɔ Opoku Ware II Jubilee Foundation, and the Manhyia Archives, which preserve his remarkable contributions to Asanteman and Ghana.
