@nytimes: Scientists are studying whether GLP-1 medications could be lifespan-enhancing. Dana Smith, a health reporter for Well, explains the latest research around how these drugs might affect aging. Video by Dana G. Smith and Theodore Tae/The New York Times #glp1 #health
Just a point of clarification: glp1 itself does not directly reduce muscle mass. Evidence points to rapid weight loss, eating less and sometimes less exercise. One can actually gain muscle mass on glp1 if they are intentional with their diet

Whenever a person loses a significant amount of weight, they will lose some muscle mass, regardless of how the person loses the weight. The question for GLP-1 weight loss is whether the muscle loss is significantly more than other weight loss methods. What are the percentages of fat loss vs. lean body mass lost with a GLP-1 and how does that compare with other weight loss drugs as well as diet changes? There is also at least one study out there that shows or suggests that a significant amount of the nonfat weight lost on a GLP-1 is related to the liver and changes in liver size. It’s a complex issue that hasn’t been fully resolved.

Great video, very educational. The question is since we have much more data about the treatment of obesity using surgical means, why do we talk so little about this? Getting patients healthier is the goal and longevity is part of this journey, and feeling great. Surgery and medication should both be discussed as patients are not the same, and all benefit from different tools during their journey getting healthier.

I think they’re doing great things for a lot of people. The only down side for me is that I don’t think I want to live longer. Buuut I do want to live my older years healthier so it’s worth considering.

My family doctor went on Mounjaro 4 years ago. She actually said to me that she is about to age backwards! I am certain that there is so much more to this drug that we do not know! It can do so much good. Weight loss is just a side effect! Affordability is another issue! 😞
