The piolet is technically correct that an MOA isn’t restricted airspace for civilian aircraft. But aviation isn’t just about what you’re legally allowed to do. It’s about risk management and cooperation. If you’re under IFR, you’re receiving an ATC clearance. ATC has the bigger picture. They can see traffic you can’t, know what military activity is occurring, and are responsible for keeping everyone separated safely. Arguing over whether you technically can fly through an active MOA misses the point. If ATC says, ‘Go around,’ the safest and most professional response is to go around. Saving a few minutes isn’t worth increasing the risk of a conflict with high-speed military traffic. Good pilots don’t spend their careers asking, “What’s the minimum I can legally get away with?” They ask, “What’s the safest decision for everyone on board?”
