Janice Nix has been found guilty of manslaughter nearly 48 years after the d*ath of five-year-old Andrea Bernard, bringing one of Britain’s longest-running child d*ath investigations to a close. The verdict was delivered at Isleworth Crown Court following a retrial of the events surrounding Andrea’s d*ath in Thornton Heath, south London, in 1978. Andrea suffered serious injuries after what was initially described as a tragic accident involving a hot bath at the family home. She later d*ed from complications linked to those injuries. At the time, investigators accepted the explanation given to police, and no criminal charges were brought, allowing the case to remain unresolved for decades. The investigation was reopened after Andrea’s older brother, Desmond Bernard, came forward with new evidence more than forty years later. Bernard told detectives he had lied as a child because he was frightened of Janice Nix and feared the consequences of speaking out. His testimony became a key part of the prosecution’s case and helped revive interest in the historic investigation. During the trial, prosecutors argued that Andrea’s injuries were not accidental but Janice had forced Andrea to get in the bath as punishment. Medical experts told the jury that the evidence supported the prosecution’s version of events, while the court also heard allegations of repeated mistreatment within the household. Prosecutors claimed both Andrea and Desmond lived in an atmosphere of fear and intimidation during their childhood. Jurors were told that misleading accounts given during the original investigation prevented police from uncovering the truth at the time. Defence lawyers challenged the reliability of evidence presented so many years after the incident, highlighting the difficulties that can come with prosecuting historic cases. Despite this, prosecutors insisted the evidence clearly pointed to Nix’s responsibility for Andrea’s d*ath. After weeks of testimony, the jury found Janice Nix guilty of manslaughter and child cruelty offences relating to Desmond Bernard. Prosecutors described the conviction as an example of justice finally catching up with a crime that had remained hidden for nearly half a century. The case has since attracted national attention and renewed discussion about the importance of reopening historic abuse investigations when new witnesses and evidence emerge. #truecrime #horror #murder #ukcrime #london
