‎السبت اللي طاف، رحنا مجمع المثنى زيارة أخيرة قبل التعديلات القادمة. بالثمانينات والتسعينات، كان من أهم الوجهات بالكويت٫ ومشهور بشركة المكتبات الكويتية، أكبر مكتبة بوقتها، وفيها كتب بالعربي والإنجليزي بكل المجالات. أذكر بأيام الجامعة ، كان من الأماكن القليلة اللي نلقى فيها كتب عن البرمجة. ‎وفيه أول محل هوايات المجسمات وتلوينهم بالشرق الأوسط، محل فهد بوصالح، واللي للحين ما شاءالله مفتوح ويعتبر محل تاريخي. ‎بس مع مرور الوقت، ومع طلعة المجمعات الكبيرة، وعقود الـBOT اللي خلصت، صار في مشاكل قانونية وقفت أي تطوير. شوي شوي المحلات سكرت، والمكان صار كأنه مدينة أشباح. ‎ والحين، فصل يديد بيبتدي. ‎بعد قرار المحكمة، وزارة المالية أصدرت قرار بإخلاء المجمع بالكامل – تجاري وسكني – بتاريخ 30 يوليو 2025… يعني اليوم. ‎هالشي تمهيد لمشروع شراكة بين الحكومة والقطاع الخاص علشان يطورون المكان من جديد. في شوية محلات للحين صامدين، بس حتى اللي لهم فوق ٤٠ سنة يمكن يقفلون قريب. Last Saturday, we visited the iconic Al Muthana Complex—a once-thriving landmark in the heart of Kuwait City. Back in the ’80s and ’90s, this place was the destination. It was especially known for The Kuwait Bookshops, the largest bookstore at the time, with a massive collection of Arabic and English publications. I still remember during my early 2000s college days—this was one of the few places we could find technical books. It’s also home to the Middle East’s first hobby store, Fahad BouSaleh’s shop, which, thankfully, still appears to be open. A truly historic shop. But over time, as mega malls took over and the lease under the BOT (build-operate-transfer) model expired, legal disputes stalled any redevelopment. One by one, shops shut down, and the complex slowly turned into a ghost town. Now, a new chapter is about to begin. Following a recent court decision, the Ministry of Finance issued an eviction notice to all commercial and residential tenants: they must vacate the complex by July 30, 2025—that’s today. This comes ahead of a public-private partnership project to redevelop and modernize the site.
