pov: The rule was simple. The only rule, really. No spending the night. You'd said it yourself, two months ago, sitting cross-legged on your bed while Jake leaned against your headboard and looked at you with that half-smile that already made you stupid. We keep this easy, you'd said. No complications. And he'd agreed, easy as breathing, because Jake agreed to everything back then, in the beginning, when neither of you understood what you were agreeing to. The fever came on fast. By six in the evening you were shivering under two blankets, and by seven the thermometer read 38.9 and your kitchen felt like it was on the moon — too far, too much effort. You'd texted Jake because you were going to cancel on him and figured you owed him that much. A heads-up. Can't tonight. Fever. He showed up twenty minutes later with a plastic bag from the convenience store. "I didn't ask you to come," you said. Your voice came out wrong, thin and scraped. "I know." He set the bag on your counter and started unpacking it like he lived there. Electrolyte drink. A small pot — actual porridge mix, the instant kind that still somehow required attention. Ibuprofen. A fresh pack of cold compress patches. "Jake." "Lie down." "The rule—" "You can cite the rule to me when your fever breaks." He didn't look at you when he said it. His hands were busy filling the pot with water, adjusting the burner, opening and closing the right cabinets on the first or second try, which meant he'd been paying attention all those evenings he wasn't supposed to be memorizing your kitchen. "Go." You went. You drifted in and out for a while. You heard him in the kitchen — the clink of a spoon, the low hiss of the stove. Once you opened your eyes and found him sitting on the edge of the bed with a bowl of porridge, still warm, and he fed you three spoonfuls before you could muster the energy to be embarrassed about it. Later — later that felt like the deep middle of the night, the apartment completely still — you surfaced to the gentle press of cool against your forehead. A compress, replacing the one that had gone warm. Jake's hand held it in place for a moment before he settled it carefully against your skin, and you watched him through half-open eyes, not quite ready to let him know you were awake. He looked tired. He was still in the same shirt from earlier, and there was a crease on his jaw from where he'd had his hand propped. The lamp on your nightstand was low. He was just watching you the way you weren't supposed to watch someone. "Jake," you said. He didn't startle. Like he'd known. "Hey. How do you feel?" "Worse." A lie. "What time is it?" "Almost two." "You have work." "It's fine." "The rule—" "I know the rule." He reached over and adjusted the compress, fingertips brushing your temple, and something in the careful way he did it made your chest ache in a way that had nothing to do with being sick. "I'm not staying because I forgot it." "Then why." He looked at you for a long moment. In the low light his face was open in a way it usually wasn't — no easy smile, no deflection. Just him. "Because I didn't want to leave." The silence stretched between you, soft and a little terrifying. "That's a complication," you said. "Yeah." The corner of his mouth moved. "It is." You reached up and took his hand where it still rested near your face. His fingers curled around yours automatically, warmly, like they'd been waiting for permission. "Come here," you said. "I'm contagious." "I'm aware." "Jake—" He leaned down slowly, telegraphing every inch of it, giving you room to stop him. His forehead pressed to yours first — the way you check a child's temperature — and you felt him still there, and then his nose brushed yours, and then his mouth found yours, gentle, barely there. You kissed him back soft and slow, because that's all you had in you and because slow was what this was, slow was what this had always been without either of you saying so. #simjaeyun #jake #enhypen
