@trickybyrd: Volcanic lightning, also known as a dirty thunderstorm, occurs during severe volcanic eruptions when friction generates massive amounts of static electricity. As a volcano erupts, it ejects a dense plume of ash, rock fragments, and volatile gases into the atmosphere at extreme velocities. Within this turbulent plume, particles of ash and ice continuously collide, stripping electrons from one another and creating highly concentrated zones of positive and negative electrical charges. ​As the eruption column continues to rise and expand, these separated electrical charges build up immense potential difference. When the electrical gradient becomes too intense for the surrounding air to insulate, the air breaks down, resulting in dramatic bolts of lightning that ground themselves within the cloud or strike the volcano's crater. This phenomenon is heavily concentrated near the base of the ash plume during the initial explosive phase, driven by the intense friction of colliding rock particles. ​Higher up in the plume, a secondary charging mechanism takes over as water vapor emitted by the volcano freezes into ice crystals. The interaction between these ice crystals and cooled ash particles mimics the charging process found in normal severe thunderstorms, producing additional lightning strikes higher in the atmosphere.
